How Do Solar Panels Work?

Solar panels produce electricity from sunlight through a process known as photovoltaics. Sunlight strikes the solar panel and the energy from this is absorbed by the silicon cells within the panel. The energy then creates an electric current, also known as direct current (DC). As most homes and businesses use alternating current (AC), the system also features an inverter which changes the DC electricity into usable AC power. This can be used to run lighting, appliances and other equipment, machinery and general electronics. If your system produces more electricity than you need, you can store the excess electricity in a battery for later use or you can export it back to the grid and earn credit via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Solar panels also work on cloudy days, just not at the same high levels as on sunny days.

Most residential installations are completed in 1 to 2 days. Larger or commercial systems may take slightly longer depending on complexity, access, and roof structure. We always agree a clear installation timeline with you in advance.

In most cases, no. Solar panels are considered permitted development for homes and commercial properties. However, if you’re in a conservation area, own a listed building, or plan to install ground-mounted systems, planning may be required. We’ll advise you during the site survey.

Impressed with Chris and Liam. They struggled a bit with getting the kit as there seems to be a UK wide shortage but it all came together more rapidly than other firms were quoting. They gave advice on the best set of kit to get and now with batteries and iboost for hot water my gas boiler is switched off and power bills for summer will be very small. Need to wait for winter to see how everything performs then.

We are now just into our 4th year of solar panels and storage supplied by EdenPower. It is one of the best decisions we have made for our home. When we first had them installed, Chris estimated a 6-7 year payback period, but that was before the energy price spike which has meant our payback will now be achieved in year 5! Service from Chris and the team has been superb. When I made an enquiry about the lead time for a third storage battery, it was installed and working the same week. For me, this is one of the best reasons to go for an owner managed local company rather than a massive firm who are only interested in getting the deal done. I know with Chris that if I have an issue I can pick up the phone and he will get it sorted, but fortunately that’s not something I’ve needed to do, as the whole system is working beautifully. I already had solar panels when I had a chat with Chris at Edenpower but he mentioned adding batteries to my set up I went ahead with the battery system and have to say that it was a smooth process from start to finish Chris was swift at the installation piece and no mess whatsoever.
